Who we are
Founded in 1977 by Suen Hughes, Island Dance Academy (IDA) has been a cornerstone of dance education in East Hawaiʻi for nearly five decades.
Suen, a graduate of the University of Hawaiʻi at Hilo in Dance and Education, combined her teaching expertise with professional training from the Greater Houston Civic Ballet and mentorship under renowned artists such as Agnes DeMille, Finis Young, Bruce Marks, Ronn Guidi, and Earnest Morgan.

Today, IDA continues to provide high-quality instruction in classical ballet, tap, jazz, and pointe for students starting as young as four years old. Our leveled classes are designed to nurture growth, skill development, and a lifelong love of dance in a supportive environment.
In 2025, Megan Kimata—who has been with IDA since 2006—became the owner and director. Trained under Suen Hughes and other notable instructors, Megan is committed to continuing IDA’s tradition of excellence and fostering a new generation of dancers.
